Meat & Poultry Food The world’s meat and poultry food industry comprises mainly of the following segments Beef is the red meat gained from cattle, mainly cows. Replete with high protein and other valuable nutrients, Humans have been consuming it since prehistoric times and currently is the most consumed item across the globe irrespective of its likeness by masses. Lamb refers to sheep’s meat under the age of one. Sheep older than two years provide meat which is called mutton. These are the terms for US and EU mainly otherwise in Indian Subcontinent and its neighboring countries such as Pakistan, goat meat is also referred to as mutton. Lamb meat is considered one of the most expensive and it’s also the most tender and juicy of all meat types. Chicken raised for the sole purpose of white meat production are known as broiler. Using various feed types, chicken acquire ample weight in four to six weeks, making them eligible for slaughter. Their production is on mass scale, consisting hundreds of thousands of birds per farm. Their demand is steady and is not considered the priciest. Among the three segments, boiler is most susceptible to malpractices and chicken diseases because of generally less regulated framework. How much is the Global Produce Production of beef is always on accent with an increment of almost over couple hundred basis points every coming year. With expected 2018 growth to be hovering at around two percent, total production volume will stand at a whopping 62.6 million tons. Such a large surge can only be attributed to better animal husbandry and advancements in farm technology resulting in growth of millions of animals. Smart slaughtering machines also ensure minimum bad cuts on the meat which saves it from being dumped. Of the volume mentioned above, almost half of it is contributed by Brazil and United States alone. For broiler chicken, the production is also showing steep accent. Year 2018 will see one percent increment, which will ensure a production volume of near ninety one million tons (91 mn tons). Again in this sector, Brazil and United states take the lead owing to large export orders they receive. The surge in demand is spectacular over the period of time and it jumped manifolds post 2005. Regions with highest consumption are South Asia and parts of Africa. Advancement in feeding technology and hygiene improvements are factors behind its rise. Also a major change occurred when the world shifted from free range chicken farming to enclosed chicken coups and cabins which made organization and monitoring more easy. Mutton and lamb industry is the most niche of all. Considered a high end consume, interestingly its demand has been steady over years and is supply driven unlike the general trend. Top producers include Australia and New Zealand owning to their natural topography and country’s wide and never ending lush green pastures and also occasional deserts strips. As of 2017, total annual production is the lowest of all at around twelve (12) million tons. Regarding pricing, it has been historically high and trend seems that it will not abate. Who are the prime producers? Beef For beef, in the next decade of this century, we might see some developing countries being counted as one of the top producers. Currently though it’s being led by Brazil China European Union USA but some studies show that these countries will see the production slip in coming years. For cattle, countries like Brazil and Argentina benefit from abundant supply of natural sources necessary to remain self sufficient. Availability of large swaths of plush green grasslands and a decreasing real state will further help their cause.  Other countries in the limelight for future are Argentina, Pakistan, Vietnam and India which have their own set of reasons mainly a growing domestic consumption because of high birth rate and application of better and technological advanced methods for feeding, slaughtering, slicing and packaging technology. Lamb & Mutton Chinese trade data for lamb and mutton is ambiguous but it holds almost 24% of the market share. Interestingly, Chinese themselves are the largest producer, consumer and importer of ovine meat from across the globe. Followed by China are Australia and New Zealand, who are biggest exporters as well, Then comes the turn of Sudan, Turkey and Algeria who have sizeable produce annually. Africa is the second largest producer of sheep meet by percentage share Broiler Chicken Chicken has seen steep increase in production in last decade and seems to keep climbing. We have divided the broiler production by region and not exactly countries, they are mentioned as below China Brazil USA EU Consumption of chicken is highest in China followed by Brazil. Other countries in the list are from Far East Asia such as Thailand. World Trends In the beef category, China seems to be the leading contender for consumption and thus imports. China is expected to import around one million tons of beef in 2018, almost one percent increase from last year. Growing population and urbanization (which results in more restaurants) are some reason behind the demand surge. Big guns seem interested in the lucrative Chinese market and among the top exporters are South American countries namely Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Previously Australia used to lead these three countries but has fallen back since mainly due to herd building which had fallen to very low levels. For Australia it will take some time before they can attain their number one export status. Other countries competing for export orders are Canada and USA but owing to some tough regulations in China in regards to hormone treated cattle, their beef had been prohibited there. Although China itself being a large producer still imports beef might be a surprise for many but it should not be. Chinese producers are not well knit but rather small independent units. Lack of good cold chain and investment in the sector has forced it to go for imports. Considering China’s growth as leading economic power, we might see a dip in imports in coming years as investment in this sector might rise and supply chain inefficiencies removed. Coming to lamb and mutton side, again we see the peak demand rising from China at about 24% of total global produce. The demand is high due to not just the meat but also soup consumption in China. Mutton which is the meat of goat is mainly consumed by Muslim countries and is considered slightly less expensive than lamb. Other smaller countries include Sudan and UK which have seen good demand rise in last few years. EU consists of about 12% share and Middle East market has acquired 19%. In broiler chicken sector, EU has overtaken China in consumption over years but just marginally. EU’s import of chicken in 2018 was near 11.3 million tons compared to 11 million of China. Brazil, EU and China are the largest exporters as well of chicken interestingly. Supply increase is mainly due to improvements overtime in Chicken farming and hygiene control which results in less number of deaths and healthy chicken. On the demand side, the significant increase in per capita income is also showing its role as more are have disposable income which they spend in grocery stores where poultry and other meat items have a world of their own. Leading companies Below mentioned are some companies which rake in the most dollars in their categories For chicken, below are the big five JBS S.A Brazil Tyson Foods Inc USA BRF Brazil Wen’s Food Group China New Hope Group China They are listed as per number of slaughters per year, with JBS from Brazil coming with a figure of three and a half billion (3.5 billion) chickens per year! For beef, below are the top producers JBS S.A Brazil Tyson Foods Inc USA Shuanghui China Cargil USA Surprisingly, for lamb and mutton meat, there are no big names or brands but rather collection of small or medium sized farms and companies operating on their own and collectively contributing to overall production volume. In this case, in 2017, we have New Zealand came at top in production after Australia which is then followed by UK Challenges faced by industry Tougher Regulations Due to high level of pathogens found in farm meat, authorities have been alert ever since and producers are required to maintain certain level of vaccination and health of the animal or bird in possession so that they be compliant as per their standards. Exporters need to know various certificate requirements in countries they are willing to export. Health Risk of meat consumption Another genuine threat for producers and exporters of meat are the recent studies being done on finding co relation between conditions such as heart failures to excessive red meat consumption. Besides it there are many other studies showing harmful impact of meat on human health. To counter such narrative, producers must be well equipped to let know the general population about the falsification of such reports and also let people know that excess of anything is bad. If consumed in limited amount, meat is not harmful for the human body. Rising Raw Material Cost Cost of producing grains for animals is on all time high and might keep rising. Plus animal’s vaccinations and medicines also make a dent in the overall profits. Suppliers need to have long lasting relation with the grain producers so that they quote them the best and also should develop links with foreign suppliers of feed and veterinary medicines which can be found on any good b2b portal so that their material could be imported in lower prices compared to procuring locally.
